Wow Signal iOS Developer Interview With Pratik Luharuka

We recently came across a unique game titled ‘Wow Signal’ that is going to be launched on iOS platform and got in touch with the developers of this fun game. Here is our interview with Pratik Luharuka from Pixel Drop Studios, where we get an in-depth glimpse at this game and some interesting aspects of game development:

Tell us a bit about your game Wow Signal and what was it that inspired you to make this game?

WOW Signal is an endless runner where players will journey into the mysterious and dangerous space. On their journey they will experience first-hand the dangers of the infinite universe as they battle and make their way through various celestial bodies like Black Holes, Pulsars, Stars, Asteroids and of course Aliens as well! All for the purpose of finding these WOW Signals.

The Wow Signal was a 72 second radio signal received on August 15, 1977, by Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope in the United States, then used to support the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. The signal remains the strongest candidate for an alien radio transmission ever detected!

Naming a game is almost always one of the most difficult tasks since that’s what people identify it with. Was this name the first choice for the name? If not then what were some other options you were looking at?

As I mentioned above, the game is based on a real life premise of the WOW Signal. Hence, the title was pretty clear for us.

The artwork of this game is simply gorgeous. What sort of thought process went behind that?

The credit for the artwork goes to Elvis – he’s the illustrator behind the visuals. He absolutely brought our vision to life and nailed the look and feel.

What was the major challenge in developing this game?

Game Design itself is pretty challenging. Conceptualizing, Designing, Programming and then Marketing are mammoth departments, so imagine a small indie team inter-managing them. It gets pretty hard at times but the end result is rewarding. Bringing to life the endless abyss of our universe has been the most challenging to us.

Any in-game secrets that could be easter eggs for players to discover?

You will have to play the game to find out!

What according to you makes this game special and different from all the other space based games out there?

The premise of the WOW Signal is that you are chasing after this particular signal that we received from space way back in 1977. Earth is on it’s last leg, and summing up its last reserves, you have been sent to chase after the WOW Signal, believing that this might lead you to the knowledge and technology required to save Earth. An endless runner fits perfectly into this storyline, because you are now on this eternal quest through infinite space chasing after what perhaps is the last hope of humanity. The endless runner genre gives us so many options to keep adding mysterious space events and celestial bodies into the mix. Space literally is endless, and hence the endless runner category is perfect.

The game isn’t an endless runner just for the sake of it, the concept demands it. What would be different is the beautiful graphics and animations that will make you want to just play it as a pure visual treat. And also, we’re not making a straight forward endless runner – we are keeping different ‘zones’ in the game. Think of them like mini maps. We don’t want to disclose too much this early, but we’re working on putting a twist to it.

How much time did it take to get this game developed and what can players expect in updates for this game?

I think it’s been almost one and a half years. A month or two of figuring out the storyline and the concept. Another three months for the visuals to come in. Then there was gestation period where we were working on other projects (Quote Codes and Shut the Window. Do check them out!) so that we could gather the experience to pull off Wow Signal. Six months back, I and Joseph started getting things in order, charting out the time frame and other nitty grit-ties. And it’s been in development for over three months now. We would love to share our story with you all, if you’d like to be a part of our journey, please do subscribe to us here

Why space as a theme for your game? Any personal fascinations regarding it?

This game was more of a personal wish of mine as I did not find any good casual game based on space. We were brainstorming about how to make a game based on this notion that we hit upon the concept of the ‘WOW Signal’, we immediately could see the potential of this

What kind of research went into the development of this game?

Our primary research was mainly on the concept of the WOW Signal. Right from the start we knew we had to design a game around it. Then the challenge was to make it different and beautiful than any other space game out there.

How many people worked on the development of this game and any interesting dev stories?

Let’s see. There’s me (Pratik), I am a big space buff you might say. This game was more of a personal wish of mine as I did not find any good casual game based on space. Then there’s Joseph. I and Joseph were brainstorming about how to make a game based on this notion that we hit upon the concept of the ‘WOW Signal’, we immediately could see the potential of this. Then comes Elvis – he’s the illustrator behind the visuals – All the stunning artwork credit would go to him. He absolutely brought our vision to life. Next up is the brains behind the operation – Kunal, our lead developer, more often than not, our sole developer! I and Kunal have been working tirelessly to perfect everything about the game while Joseph is the one coming up with new ideas to incorporate. Lastly, is the man behind the beautiful music – Joel. When he gets to work, there’s only one word that describes him – genius.

Sorry, I think I blabbered too long. The short answer would be 5. 5 people worked on it.

When is the game coming out?

We are hoping to launch the game in the next 8-10 weeks!

Any message for our readers?
